Churchill's Open Mic 7/13/2010

I really enjoy Tuesday night's at Churchill's Bar & Grill.  It's a comfortable place to relax, have some drinks, visit with friends and listen to music.  Most Tuesday nights have a fairly good crowd.  After all, it is lady's night and Churchill's offers great drink specials to all of the ladies.  Mostly though, I really love the music.

This week we got started off with John P. Barton.

Josh Wager made his way out from way down on the south side of Houston to share a few songs with us.

Kim and John were hanging out with friends at Churchill's this week and decided to pick up the house guitar and entertain us for a while.

Randy Soffar makes it in on a regular basis these days and brings us some of his fine rock originals as well as some classic covers.  He gave us some Dylan this time due to a special request
.

Kim wasn't done on the stage and picked up the guitar herself to give us a couple more songs.

Then she inspired the boys so they joined up.  John, Josh, and Jerrod harmonized their way through a few more.

And that was a fun and entertaining night of music at Churchill's.  We do this every Tuesday and would love to have you come out and join us.

Churchill's Open Mic 7/5/2010

Well it's long past time that I sat down and got some pictures posted.  My day job has been keeping me hopping for the past few weeks and I just haven't had the time.  I'm still busy, and that's still good, but I'm going to try to squeeze in a blog post or two to get everything up to date.

Tuesdays have been a little on the slow side for the past few weeks, we've had graduations, vacations, holiday weekends, basketball playoffs and world cup.  The days are staying light later and the rain has been crazy.  In-spite of all of that we still have a great time at Churchill's Open Mic every Tuesday night.

Last week we got some great jams with Willie B and Stephen Daly.

Amy Waters got up next.  Amy was bitten by the open mic bug a couple of months ago and has become a devout regular both at Churchill's and at the Ashford Arms on Thursday.

Brooklyn drops in at Churchill's after work quite often, but it's usually too late for her to get up and sing a few songs for us.  Last week was different.  She had the night off and came out early for her first time performance on Churchill's stage.

Je' Reece was back in the house last week.  Je' came out a month or two ago and after getting everybody talking about him, disappeared for several weeks.  It was great to have him back with his soulful sound and style.  He got a little help from Stephen Daly on guitar.

John Barton followed Je' and played a fine mix of covers and originals.  John has huge repertoire and is quite entertaining on stage and off.

And finishing up the list was Alan Young.  Alan came out to Churchill's celebrating his 50th birthday.  We weren't going to let him get out without playing us a few songs.

Once again a great night of music at Churchill's.  We are there every Thursday night with an Acoustic Music Open Mic. And remember, Tuesdays are also Lady's Night at Churchill's with great drink specials for all of the ladies in the house.  Come out and join us!

Churchill's Open Mic 6/1/2010

Things were a bit slow at Churchill's last Tuesday, but that didn't stop us from having plenty of fun and playing music.  Seems like whether we have a few players or a few too many, it's always a good time.  Churchill's is just a good place to hang out with friends.  They have good food and drink specials throughout the week,  Open Mic every Tuesday, Karaoke every Thursday, bands every Friday and Saturday, and solo or small combo groups on Sunday afternoons.  This alleged sports bar is quickly turning into a popular music venue.

The Open Mic lineup on Tuesday was John Barton, Randy Soffar, and Bruce Ross. Everyone got their spotlight, and then we pretty much just jammed the night away.  Plenty of fun and the bar patrons were appreciative.

Here is John Barton opening the evening with Randy Soffar backing him up on the Djembe.

Randy followed John and did a fun long set that included several of his originals from his Z Rock days.  ...and I didn't get one decent picture of him playing.  Here he is having a good time though.

Bruce Ross then took the stage and gave us a nice selection of his arrangements and new songs from his band Significant Others.

Then friends...
we jammed.

And it was fun.

And this is why we do it.

Thanks to Sarah, Marianne and the rest of the folks at Churchill's for supporting live music.

Churchill's Open Mic 5/25/2010

Tuesday's Open Mics at Churchill's are always fun and entertaining and this week was no different.  Things started off a little slow...a little late.  Seems like ever since the time changed people don't start showing up until later.  It doesn't seem to matter though because one we kick off the music everyone starts having a great time. We saw mostly old friends and regulars this week and had some pretty fun jams.

The music kicked off with Randy "The Rockin' Realtor" Soffar playing some favorite covers and a couple of his better known originals.

Tina Allen and Mitch Tiffin have joined together to make an excellent duet.  They are getting out to play at quite a few venues now, so it's always an honor when they make it out to the open mics.

Amy Waters has been totally bitten by the Open Mic Bug and hasn't missed a Tuesday at Churchill's since she first happened in.  She is learning to play guitar and perform live at the same time...and doing a terrific job. This week she got Mitch Tiffin to help her out on the guitar for her first song, but then got after it herself for the rest of her set.

Clyde Sayre took the stage next with Randy Soffar on electric guitar and John Barton on djembe.  That boy can shake out some awesome blues and rock and with the backup from Randy and John it was an excellent set.

John Barton then went front and center for his own set and kept Randy up on the electric guitar.  John always plays a fun set of covers and originals.

I'd also like to thank Zane Nordin, Kim Kyle, and Terry Rogers for coming by.  Time constraints kept them from sticking around long enough to play but it was nice to have them drop in and support the open mic.  Also, many thanks to all of you music lovers out there that do so much to help us do what we love to do.  Your support of local live music is greatly appreciated.

Churchill's Open Mic 5/11/2010

Last Tuesday at Churchill's Bar & Grill was just an amazing night of music.  We opened the evening with Justus taking the featured slot.  Tim Jewell and Dirk Hetrick play a diverse array of classic rock and country songs.

We started off the off the Open Mic with a new comer to Churchill's, Jake Honeycutt, who gave us some nice country covers.

Randy Soffar took the stage next and rocked the house with some of his original music. He also invited The Revernd Doctor Otis Futhermucker up to help him out.

Ira Perez joined us for the second time at Churchill's. Ira is an incredibly talented performer and song writer.  You WILL hear more about this young woman.  Mark my words!

Don and Jake were back at Churchill's this week for their second appearance at Open Mic.  This night they hooked up with Kevin on the Stand Up Bass and Chris Mitchell on Soprano Saxophone.

John P Barton took the stage next and shared some of his originals and a cover with us.  Wayne Lacey joined him on the Djembe, and yours truly played a little harmonica with him.

Amy Waters was a new act to Churchill's stage, and only here second open mic ever.   She just picked up a guitar about four months ago and is already confident enough to get out to the open mics.  She did a fantastic job.

Stephen Daly took the stage next and threw down an excellent performance of classic rock and blues.  Stephen invited Chris Mitchell to join him with some Saxophone on a song, and Otis Futhermucker blew his fine harp for one song.

"Little Terry" Rogers has become a regular performer at Churchill's Open Mic.  He sings and plays some excellent blues harmonica.  He brought Otis Futhermucker up to accompany him on guitar as well as Kevin with his stand up bass.

We ended the list with none other than Coco of Coco and the Players.  He gave us an excellent selection of songs and got a little help from Otis Futhermucker on harmonica.

It was quite an evening of music indeed, and I'd like to thank each and everyone of you for your support of live music and open mics.
