Churchill's Acoustic Open Mic

Tuesday January 26th was the very first open mic at Churchill's Bar & Grill.  Churchill's is a relatively new establishment located on the corner of West Airport and FM 1464.  Although it is a bit of a drive from the inner city is is very accessible to the southwest communities, and outlying suburbs and easy to find.  Parking is ample and well lit.  When you walk in the door at Churchill's you will find a clean establishment with friendly staff and patrons.  Darts, pool and couple of video sports games are available but don't interfere with the performance area.  There are plenty of TVs for the sports fans, but the volume is kept down except for special occasions. They have a very good menu with lots of tasty choices for lunch and dinner and a full bar with a fair selection of beers.  Owner David Swain is very proud of his place and completely approachable if you'd like to offer suggestions or praise.

The acoustic open mic is a three song (15 minute max) format. Sign up is in person, and first come first served.  Covers and originals are welcome as well as all types of music.  It is an "acoustic" open mic so no drum kits or large amplifiers are allowed.  The sound system was more than adequate with hefty main speakers and a stage monitor. Two quality mics with stands were provided as well as instrument cables and an inline guitar tuner.  The room acoustics are not so good due to concrete floors and steel ceilings, but  the sound was balanced well for the situation.

There were plenty of musicians in attendance, ranging from intermediate to accomplished. The audience was quite appreciative and were generous with both applause and tips.

Churchill's looks like it's going to be a great open mic venue and they are considering hosting a band jam night as well.  When you stop in tell Dave what you think about the open mic and the band jam idea.
